Kia has just come out with a brand-new subcompact SUV called the 2018 Kia Stonic. This is a second vehicle of its kind to debut in a span of a week, after Kia’s sister company Hyundai just debuted their own take on the small SUV, with the Kona. Both of these models will be joining the already jam packed compact SUV segment that includes the likes of Chevrolet Trax, Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke, as well as the Toyota C-HR. Also expected to join the pack in the near future are the Ford Ecosport and a new model from Volkswagen.
The new model will be underpinned by a strong and sturdy new platform that features a ultra-lightweight construction, built around 51 percent high-strength steel. In terms of design, the Stonic features some hard character lines and a new C-pillar design. In the back there are some taillights with U-shaped LEDs, decent sized rear spoiler, as well as the faux skid plate on the bottom of the bumper.
Inside the cabin, the Stonic features compact packaging that allows for a decent amount of space inside. According to Kia, this new model will offer a yet to be determined class-leading amount of shoulder room, as well as about 12.4 cubic feet of storage room in the trunk. Furthermore, the interior is filled with a bevy of tech features like the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, as well as a touchscreen-based infotainment system, all of which will come as standard. The new Stonic will also come with multiple tech aids and safety features like the adaptive cruise control, collision warning, automatic braking, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, and rear cross traffic warning.
Engine and Powertrain
In terms of powertrain, exact specs are yet to be released for the US market, but in the European and Asian markets there will reportedly be a choice of gasoline engines ranging from 1.0 to 1.4 liters in terms of displacement. There will also be a 1.6-liter diesel variant. We could also see the 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder and the 175-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder under the Stonic’s hood. These are the powertrains featured in the new Kona, where they are mated to a six-speed automatic and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, respectively.
2018 Kia Stonic Release Date and Price
