A brand-new model of what looks to be the 2019 BMW X4 M40i has just been spotted testing. Some features characteristic of the BMW M performance variants were a dead giveaway, making it safe to say that this prototype from the spy shots is most likely the high-performance version of the next generation of the popular X4 SUV.
The signs that led us to the conclusion that we’re dealing with an M Performance model are the enlarged intakes in the front bumper and chunky side sills. We also spotted blue brake calipers, slightly lower ride height as well as larger exhaust tips, all very characteristic of the M performance variant vehicles. The real X4 M model, and not the M40i should come with even bigger air intakes in the front bumper and quad-exhaust tips in the back.

Completely new for the 2019 model year will be the platform underpinning the X4 M40i. Even though most of the mechanics will be familiar, BMW is said to feature a brand-new SUV version of the BMW Group’s modular design called the CLAR. This platform first premiered in the 2016 7-Series and stand out thanks to its lightweight construction and compatibility with alternative powertrains.
Engine and Powertrain
In terms of powertrain, the 2019 BMW X4 M40i should come with a vary similar setup as the outgoing model of the X4 M40i. The only real change we expect to see is in the output. The new and improved M40i should offer slightly more that what the current model manages with its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine, which is 355 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, expect to see the 2019 BMW X4 M40i stick with the current model’s 8-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, as well as the sport-tuned steering and sport suspension with adaptive dampers.
2019 BMW X4 M40i Release Date and Price
The current model of the X4 was just introduced this year, but if BMW is already testing the new prototype, it means the redesigned BMW X4 M40i can not be too far behind. There is no official release date information as of yet, but we expect to see the new model late next year, as a 2019 model. The pricing is also yet to be announced, but we don’t expect BMW to deviate much from the current $45.000 starting price.
