The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 prototype was recently undergoing winter testing when it was captured by some spy cameras. Remarkably, this new model will mark the G63’s first-ever redesign since its launch nearly four decades ago. So, you can bet that the folks over at AMG will take their time until the new G63 is just right.

Exterior and Interior

The prototype that was captured at the Nurburgring track was heavily camouflaged, but we are almost certain that the vehicle in question none other than the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. The signature AMG uprated wheels and brakes were the first giveaway. Moreover, the extra-big openings in the lower part of the front bumper look just like the ones that are featured on the outgoing model. We expect that the new G63, and its G-Class cohorts to come out of this redesign wider and lower than ever before. The low stance will help lower the center of gravity and in turn improve the vehicle’s stability on the road as well as of it. We also expect Mercedes and AMG to reduce the body weight of the entire G-Class. Look out for an increase in aluminum and high-strenght steel usage in the construction process that will result in a weight loss of as much as 400 pounds. Not to mention the performance gains this weight cut could lead to.

On the inside, we expect to see some dramatic changes as well. From what we can tell from these new spy shots, the new G63’s main infotainment screen will be integrated with the dash. There also appears to be a grab handle still present on the passenger side. Furthermore, look out for a new digital instrument cluster that will be placed right behind the multi-function steering wheel.

Engine and Powertrain

When it comes to the powertrain, we expect the new 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 to come with AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 that is sure to shell out well over the current 563 horsepower output of the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 that can be found in the outgoing model of the G63. But, if you are looking for even more power than that, you will need to hold out for the G65’s redesign that is coming sometime in the near future. The new and improved G65 should see an update of its V12 engine, and offer even more firepower than the G63. These new redesigned AMG models could be offered with the same old 7-speed automatic, or Mercedes might just go all out and switch it out for their brand-new 9-speed auto.

2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 Release Date and Price

The brand-new 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 should arrive no sooner than the second half of 2018, when it will start selling as a 2019 model. The pricing will most likely stay around the same amount of $143,000.
