In collaboration with toy manufacturers, Tonka, Toyota has created the 2017 Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept. This time by teaming up to celebrate their 70th and 80th birthdays respectively, Tonka and Toyota are offering us a dream toy that will capture not only the imagination of their young fans, but more importantly, the imagination of those young-at-heart 4WD enthusiasts the world over.
Exterior
The 2017 Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept is based on Toyota’s flagship SR5 HiLux double cab variant, but Tonka makes it entirely their own and toy-like with animated black-and-yellow livery and various off-road upgrades. To supplement the off-roading capabilities HiLux Tonka’s height has been raised by as much as 150mm. This is mostly due to the new high-riding axle coupled with heavy-duty suspension and new 17-inch alloy wheels with 35-inch tires. To round up the commanding new design, Toyota adds an updated front bumper, carbon-fiber bonnet skin and an aggressive “power bulge” at the front of the vehicle.
The new HiLux Tonka also features a rather imposing 6 mm-thick alloy bash plate that will protect the sump and all the key components. Moreover, the tubular side rails are assigned to protect the body and the chassis. Other notable new features include the off-road LED light bar on the roof that will improve your vision in poor lighting situations, as well as a carbon-fiber wrapped tailgate, air scoops and an integrated rear spoiler. Inside the tailgate, the Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept stores various useful gear including an axe, shovel, high-lift jack, spare wheel, multiple storage boxes and a fire extinguisher.
Engine and Powertrain
In terms of powertrain, the new 2017 Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept will feature the same 2.8-liter engine that can be found under the hood of the outgoing Toyota Hilux SR5 production model. Although Toyota and Tonka are yet to offer the output for this powertrain, the same 2.8 liter manages to produce about 174 horsepower and 420 Nm or 310 lb-ft of torque in the regular Hilux production model. As for the transmission, the Hilux comes with a choice between the manual and automatic gearbox.
2017 Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept Release Date and Price
Toyota said they have no plans to offer a production version of the 2017 Toyota HiLux Tonka Concept. Instead, they intend to only showcase this new model at various 4WD shows, field days and expos that are scheduled for this year. So, this would be a unique opportunity for fans and enthusiasts alike to get up close and personal with the HiLux Tonka Concept.
