The 2018 Ford Ranger was confirmed for the 2018 model year by Ford. The new model is set to receive quite an extensive refreshment for the Ranger’s new cycle, but we haven’t been able to get a real look at the new model until now. A few days ago, the brand-new Ranger prototype was captured by spy cameras, undergoing some ardeous testing in Australia, and for the first time we were able to get a taste of what’s to come.
The spy images show the new Ranger’s extensive update that will not be classified as a true next-gen model, but rather just a refreshment of the outgoing model that first premiered in 2011. The 2018 Ford Ranger will reportedly be underpinned by the T6 body-on-frame platform, the same one Ford is currently using for the outgoing model of the Ranger as well as an SUV derivative, the Ford Everest, that is being produced alongside this new model.
Whats in the spy shots?
After taking a close look at the spy shots, Car Advice reported a new radar/LIDAR module that will likely improve the radar cruise control alongside with autonomous emergency braking. There also seems to be a new camera at the rear view mirror, that suggests it will work in concert with the auto emergency braking in order to detect objects and pedestrians. Moreover, look out for keyless entry, push-button start, LED daytime running lights among others once this new model hits the showrooms. In terms of design, some of the design lines and the brand-new grille are reminiscent of the Ford F-150. But one thing that was apparent from the aerial shots is a slight size reduction, compared to the outgoing model.
Engine and Powertrain
As for the powertrain,it is still a little too early to tell. The outgoing model features a pair of diesels: a 2.2-liter inline-4 engine that can produce up to 158 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.2-liter inline-5 engine that is capable of delivering an output of 197 hp and 346 lb-ft. It is very likely that the US version of the new Ranger will offer a gasoline engines, but a torquey, fuel-sipping diesel will be a little harder to come by. But, never say never.
2018 Ford Ranger Release Date and Price
The 2018 Ford Ranger will be offered globally, however the US model is said to be receiving a slightly different version, both mechanically and visually. Ford is yet to announce any release date and price info for undated Ranger, but the new model can be expected by the end of next year. The pricing will likely stay the same, around the $22.000 mark for the base model.
