The prototype for a vehicle that is rumored to be called the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4 was just spotted testing. This is the production version of the concept that Mercedes-AMG just previewed this March at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show. Judging by these latest spy shots, the new model will bare a strong resemblance to the show-stopping concept that was previewed in Geneva.

Exterior

From what we can tell from the spy images, the new 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4 heavily features the curvaceous design lines of the GT sports car. The biggest difference between the two seem to be the headlights that on the GT 4 prototype feature a more angular design. Moreover, the length of the hood on the prototype looks shorter than on the GT sports car. Of course, the length of the wheelbase has been increased and an extra pair of doors was added. Furthermore, the spy shots show a huge rear spoiler that has been added in order to hide the true shape of the fastback profile.

Although Mercedes-AMG is yet to announce any details about their new model, we can already kind of tell which direction they are planning to take with the GT 4. They have decided not to make use of the stretched version of the GT sports car’s aluminum spaceframe architecture, but instead use the MRA rear-wheel-drive architecture that is commonly used by various Mecredes-Benz models such the C and E-Class. Furthermore, we expect that AMG will make some further enhancements to strengthen the architecture and shed some weight by using lightweight materials.

Engine and Powertrain

In terms of engine and powertrain, the new 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4 will feature the recognizable 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that is capable of producing up to 500 horsepower. The hybrid powertrain that was shown in the concept, most likely won’t be made available right at the launch. AMG will need some more time before they implement the system into a production vehicle. The system reportedly works by mating the V-8 engine with an electric motor mounted at the rear, and such a combination will be able to deliver up to 805 horsepower. This combination will most likely be reserved for only for a range-topping variant.

2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Release Date and Price

The new 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4 is expected to arrive in 2018, most likely sometime during the second half of the year, which means that it will be released as a 2019 model. This new model will mark AMG’s third standalone vehicle by the time the new GT 4 reaches the showrooms. It will follow the GT sports car and Project One hypercar that should be unveiled by the end of the year.
