The 2018 Genesis G70, the latest offering from Hyundai’s luxury subdivision has just been spotted testing. Although heavily camouflaged and still in its prototype form, this new Genesis sports sedan already looks poised to make an impact in this awfully crowded segment. The G70 will further advance the developing Genesis lineup which currently consists of just two models, the G80 and G90.

Design

We were able to get a preview of the G70 back in 2016 when the Genesis New York concept first premiered, but from what we can see in these spy shots, the 2018 Genesis G70 does not bare that much resemblance to the exquisite concept model. The only features it appears to inherit are the long hood and the long dash to axle ratio. The rest of the vehicle, however, takes some apparent cues from the likes of Lexus IS (the glasshouse) and the Merceds C-Class (the rear). Furthermore, the prototype from the spy shots features beefy brakes, a prominent front splitter and a rather sporty exhaust, so there is also a strong probability that this particular model is the test mule for the 2018 Geneses G70 Sport.

Engine and Powertrain

While we don’t know all the details about the G70’s specifications yet, the fact that the ex-BMW engineering head is in charge of constructing the new chassis is certainly reassuring. This could result in some excellent dynamic qualities. Moreover, expect the new model to feature a rear-wheel drive as a standard, while the all-wheel drive could be offered as an option. However, there will only be one transmission option, an 8-speed automatic.

Under the hood, there will likely be a base turbocharged inline-4 engine. There could also be a hybrid option that mixes the inline-4 with an electric motor, the setup that was featured in the Genesis New York concept, and whose output was rated at 241 horsepower. Aside from the entry level engine, there will need to be a range topping option as well, and the G70 Sport trim would be our best bet to feature a such a setup. It could be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine with an output of about 365 horsepower. But for the official information on all this, we will need to wait a little longer, and these are only our speculations.

Competition

The 2018 Genesis G70 will enter the sports sedan segment that is saturated with the likes of Acura TLX, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, Audi A4, Jaguar XE, Lexus IS, but more importantly, the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, who are prevailing class leaders.

Genesis’s plant to stand out from all the rest is to rely on its value. Meaning, generous warranty and maintenance plans. They are reportedly thinking of offering a 5-year new-vehicle warranty, with a side of a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Not to mention a lower starting price that they will need to offer just to get their foot into the door of this super-packed segment.
